As technology increasingly permeates society, the importance of computing ethics (CE) in educational curricula has become paramount. This study examines CS 199, a one-unit computing ethics course at an R1 public university, designed to facilitate “water cooler talk”: informal yet critical discussions that scaffold students’ understanding of ethical issues in technology. The course framework aims to enable students to begin discussing ethical dilemmas, therefore building requisite knowledge to challenge the simultaneous structuring between education institutions and Silicon Valley that reinforces the status quo.
